Why We're Still Changing After All These Years
Growth doesn't have an expiry date
One question has come up more than once since we announced our transition to a classical Pilates studio:
Why now?
EQ is established. Our clients are wonderful. Classes are thriving. Linda is still teaching at 78.
Why not simply leave things as they are?
It's a fair question.
The honest answer is that we're still learning.
Pilates taught us to keep evolving
One of the things we love most about Pilates is that progress never really ends.
There is always something new to discover.
A deeper understanding of an exercise.
A stronger connection to the work.
A better way to communicate a concept.
A fresh perspective on something you thought you already understood.
Over the years, we've encouraged our clients to stay curious, to trust the process and to keep growing, regardless of age or experience.
Then, at some point, we realised we had to hold ourselves to the same standard.
If we're asking our clients to remain open to learning, we need to be willing to do the same.
Linda is still a student
People often comment on the fact that Linda is still teaching at 78. What impresses us isn't her age. It's her curiosity.
After decades of teaching, she could easily decide she'd learned enough. She could rely on experience alone and continue doing what she's always done.
But that's never been who she is.
She still studies.
She still asks questions.
She still attends workshops.
She still refines her understanding of the method.
She still comes away from conversations and training excited by a new idea she wants to explore.
In many ways, that's exactly why this transition is happening.
Not because we're chasing something new, but because we're still learning from something we've spent our lives doing.
Joe's Gym changed more than we expected
When we created Joe's Gym, we thought we were simply building a space where we could explore our growing interest in classical Pilates.
And we were. But something else happened too. The more time we spent immersed in the classical system, the more difficult it became to ignore the gap between the work we were falling in love with and the way the wider studio operated.
What started as curiosity gradually became clarity. The more we learned, the more everything seemed to fit together.
The order.
The progressions.
The purpose behind each exercise.
The way the system builds on itself over time.
What we thought would satisfy the itch actually made us more aware of it.
Instead of resolving our questions, it answered them.
And once you've experienced that level of clarity, it's difficult to go back.
Success isn't always a reason to stop
One of the biggest misconceptions about change is that it only happens when something is broken.
Sometimes that's true.
But often it isn't.
Sometimes change happens because something matters.
Sometimes change happens because you've discovered a better way of expressing what you believe. And sometimes the hardest changes are the ones you choose when things are already working.
We could have stayed exactly where we were.
Many people probably expected us to.
But we reached a point where standing still felt less honest than moving forward.
We've always put clients first
Throughout EQ's history, we've always tried to make decisions with our clients at the centre.
We've worked hard to create a welcoming space.
We've kept classes accessible.
We've invested back into the studio.
We've done our best to support people through injuries, life changes, confidence struggles and personal milestones.
We're incredibly proud of that. But we've also learned that sustainability matters.
A studio needs to work not only for the people attending classes, but for the people teaching them too.
For a business to continue serving its community well, it needs foundations that are strong enough to support everyone involved.
This transition isn't about turning our backs on what we've built.
It's about creating something that can continue to thrive for years to come.
This isn't about chasing the next thing
We know the fitness industry can sometimes feel full of trends.
That's not what this is. We're not changing because classical Pilates is fashionable. If anything, this path would be easier not to take.
We're choosing it because it's where years of study, practice, teaching and experience have led us.
The transition to a classical studio isn't a sudden decision. It's the natural result of a journey we've been on for a long time.
The courage to keep moving
One thing we've learned over the years is that growth requires movement.
The kind that happens when you trust your experience enough to follow where it's leading you.
We've watched hundreds of clients discover they were capable of more than they thought possible.
We've seen people become stronger, more confident and more resilient simply because they were willing to try something new.
This transition is our version of that.
We don't know everything that lies ahead. But we do know that standing still isn't the answer. So we're choosing to keep learning.
To keep growing. To keep moving forward.
And we hope you'll continue the journey with us.
