Why EQ Is Becoming a Fully Classical Pilates Studio
For a long time, EQ has been known as a contemporary Pilates studio, but behind the scenes, something different has been unfolding. Something quieter, deeper, and more personal.
Over the past few years, we've been on a journey that has changed how we practise, how we teach, and how we understand Pilates itself. And now, we're ready to bring that journey fully into the studio.
EQ is becoming a fully classical Pilates studio, and we want to share the "why" behind that decision.
We've been moving towards clarity
For a long time, we've felt like we've been living with a kind of identity fog.
Our hearts are in classical Pilates: the system, the order, the logic, the way each exercise builds on the one before it. But that isn't always what we're teaching day to day. We've been trying to honour classical principles inside a contemporary framework, and it has created a tension that's become increasingly difficult to reconcile.
We teach classical progressions...
on contemporary Reformers.
We cue classical rhythm...
on equipment that doesn't respond in a classical way.
We talk about the system...
in a studio that isn't fully set up like one.
It has often felt like a compromise.
Not wrong.
Not bad.
Just not aligned.
And when you're trying to teach something with integrity, that disconnect becomes exhausting.
We realised we couldn't be two things at once
Clients often ask:
"Are you classical or contemporary?"
"What style do you teach?"
"What's EQ's approach?"
And we haven't always had a simple answer.
We've been trying to be both, but the truth is that classical and contemporary Pilates are different systems. Different apparatus. Different sequencing. Different philosophy.
Trying to blend them has meant sending mixed messages about who we are and what we stand for.
We aren't confused.
But at times, we've been confusing.
And that's not the kind of leadership we want to offer.
As our classical training deepened, so did our understanding
Our classical journey began in 2021 when we started our first mentorship. Over time, that thread deepened. More training. More study. More understanding. More clarity.
By 2025, we were leading our own in-house classical mentorship for our teaching team.
We were practising classical.
Studying classical.
Teaching classical privately.
Feeling classical in our bones.
But the studio wasn't fully classical.
And the gap between what we believed and what we were delivering became harder and harder to justify.
As our understanding of the method has deepened, it's become increasingly difficult to separate what we believe from how we teach. Eventually, we came to realise that the only honest decision is to bring the studio into alignment with the work itself.
Teaching classical on contemporary machines feels like a compromise
We've spent years trying to make it work.
We really have.
But classical Pilates was built on specific apparatus: the spring tension, the dimensions, the movement pathways, and the way the equipment talks back to the body.
Contemporary machines are wonderful, but they're not classical machines.
Trying to teach classical work on contemporary apparatus feels a little like trying to play a violin with a cello bow. You can make sound. You can make music. But it's not the instrument the piece was written for.
We want to teach the method as it was designed, not an approximation of it.
We want alignment in message, method, and identity
At some point, the fog began to lift.
We're realising that EQ needs to become one thing, clearly and confidently.
Not half-classical.
Not classical-influenced.
Not contemporary-with-classical-flavour.
But classical.
A studio where the apparatus, the sequencing, the teaching, and the philosophy all speak the same language.
A studio that feels like the method we love.
A studio that reflects who we are as teachers.
A studio that finally feels like home.
And we believe our clients benefit from that clarity too. When a studio is built around one clear system, teaching becomes more consistent, progressions become easier to understand, and every piece of apparatus supports the same movement goals.
This change is about integrity, not trend
You may be wondering what this transition means for your own Pilates practice.
Will your sessions change? Will the equipment be different? What does becoming a fully classical studio actually mean for you as a client?
We'll be exploring those questions in upcoming articles. For now, we wanted to start with the most important question: why we're making this change in the first place.
Classical Pilates isn't a trend we're chasing.
It's the direction our practice has been quietly leading us for years.
This transition is about:
Clarity.
Honesty.
Alignment.
It's about teaching the method we believe in, on the apparatus it was designed for, in a studio that reflects the work itself.
And we can't wait to share that with you.
EQ is becoming the studio we always meant it to be
Clear.
Focused.
Aligned.
Classical.
And we're so grateful you're here for this next chapter.
