Pilates for Hip & Knee Replacements
Before the surgery or after – now is the right time.
Our Approach
We work alongside your medical team
We don't replace your physio or surgeon. We work with what they've told you, at the pace they've agreed, and we'll always defer to their guidance on what you should and shouldn't be doing at each stage.
What we add is structured, consistent Pilates work between your medical appointments – the thing that actually builds the strength your joint needs to function properly long term.
Don't wait months before you come to us
As soon as your physio gives you the green light, come in. You don't need to wait until you feel ready or until you're moving more freely. The sooner we can start working with you, the faster and more completely you recover.
Early, careful, progressive work is far more effective than waiting until you feel better and then starting. If you're not sure whether you're ready, call us and we'll talk it through.
Before or after surgery – this is the right time to start
Whether you're preparing for a hip or knee replacement, or you're already on the other side of it, there's a window where the right work makes an enormous difference. Most people wait too long to use it.
Two kinds of people come to us
Before surgery: You've been told a replacement is coming and you want to go into it as strong as possible. Or you're hoping to delay it altogether. Either way, building strength now gives you a better outcome on the other side – surgeons and physios know this, which is why many of them send patients to us.
After surgery: You've been given the all clear and told to build strength. Maybe someone specifically mentioned Pilates. You're probably moving carefully, compensating on your good leg, and wondering how long before things feel normal again.
Both are exactly the right time to come in.
What recovery actually looks like
The milestones our clients talk about aren't clinical measurements. They're:
Getting out of a chair without thinking about it. Getting in and out of the car without bracing. Walking without a stick. Sleeping without the ache that woke you up for months.
And something less obvious but just as important – stopping the compensation. When one leg has been struggling, your body quietly loads the other side to cope. Over time that creates its own problems. We work on restoring the balance so your good leg stops paying the price.
Progress also shows up in range of movement returning to the hip or knee, and referred pain that's been travelling into the thigh or lower back beginning to ease.
Ultimately it looks like getting back to what matters – the hobbies, the walks, the independence you had before pain started dictating your choices.
Small classes. Instructors who know your history.
EQ Pilates has been in Sutton Coldfield since 2001. Classes are capped at six people and every instructor knows what you've been through and where you're trying to get to.
Nothing is one-size-fits-all here. Your replacement, your timeline, your goals.
