Why Our Studio Sessions Are the Closest Thing to Joseph Pilates’ Original Gym in New York
When people think of Pilates, they often picture a mat class or a group on the Reformer all doing the same sequence together. But that’s not how Joseph Pilates taught.
In fact, if you’d walked into Joe’s original New York studio, you wouldn’t have seen a class at all. You’d have seen individuals, each working through their own practice—some on the Reformer, others on the Cadillac, maybe someone on the Wunda Chair or the Ped-o-Pull—all at different stages, all doing different exercises. Joe would be moving around the room, offering hands-on adjustments, giving cues, encouraging precision, or challenging someone to go deeper.
That’s the model we follow in our studio sessions.
Autonomy
Studio sessions aren’t classes in the traditional sense. They’re not led from the front. You’re not following a script. Instead, they’re rooted in independence, autonomy, and deep personalisation. You’ll have access to the full classical Pilates system: Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, High Chair, Spine Corrector, Ped-o-Pull, and more. We’ll guide you toward what’s appropriate for your body that day—based on how you’re feeling, what you’re working on, and where you want to go.
Ownership
We don’t hand out pre-written programs. Instead, we encourage our clients to tune in, take ownership of their practice, and explore. Many of them like to bring notebooks or use their phones to jot down what they did in a session, what felt good, or what they want to try next time. It becomes a living, breathing relationship with the work.
Every day is different
Some days you’ll come in ready to work hard. Other days, your body might need precision and refinement. Either way, you’re not alone—we’re always there, offering feedback, hands-on help, and the kind of support that only comes from teachers who really know you and your body.
This is how Pilates was meant to be practiced: not as choreography to follow, but as a method to live in.
If you’re curious, come and try a session. It might just change the way you move—and the way you feel in your body—for good.
